Twelve gold, 15 silver and 16 bronze medals – to personally congratulate them on their successes and honour their achievements, Federal Minister of Health Prof. Karl Lauterbach held a reception at the Ministry of Health for German athletes who participated in the World Transplant Games (WTG).

Your great examples clearly show: organ donation does not solely save lives. Or-gan donation also imbues a zest for life. As emissaries of transplant sports, you represented Germany brilliantly in Australia.

Federal Minister of Health, Prof. Karl Lauterbach

The world championships of transplant recipients and living donors are the world’s largest event promoting organ donation. They take place for all age groups every two years. More than 1,500 sportspeople from approx. 45 nations participated in the WTG 2023 in Perth, Australia. The German del-egation consisted of 29 participants (27 transplant recipients and 2 living donors). The Federal Ministry of Health has supported participants at the World Games for years through subsidies to travel costs. The next games in 2025 are hosted by Germany and will be taking place in Dresden.
