Within the framework of the 8th German-Japanese care symposium, the delegations from the two countries discussed health promotion and prevention. Their discussions centred around the question of how health promotion and prevention can help avoid the need for long-term care. External experts also took part in the discussions.
The symposium was first held in 2009 and generally takes place every two years. It offers both countries an opportunity to discuss current developments, scientific findings and political challenges related to long-term care. Japan’s demographic ageing is furthest advanced in an international comparison. Like Germany, Japan also has a separate long-term care insurance system.
This allows for a multifaceted dialogue with ideas on how to move forward with long-term care in Germany. In the long term, both systems are faced with the task of ensuring that healthcare remains affordable, skilled staff are available and the quality of care is maintained.
The expertise from the care symposium and the experience of our Japanese counterparts are taken into consideration in the work of the Federal Ministry of Health. The Ministry is currently working on a draft bill for the reform of the long-term care system.
